February 11, 2010 Portraits, Portraits, Portraits

February 11, 2010 (Karannina). After a wonderful breakfast we walked to the Science Museum which featured some of Galileo Galilee's inventions. For example, one of his inventions generated static electricity. Another invention was an conical illusion. The object went seemed to go upwards while it was on a slanted slope (see video). The last one is an invention that depended on centrifugal force. As it spins the two balls go to the farthest end and a box on a pulley system is pulled up by the force of another box getting pulled to the side. Thanks to a mirror we are perfectly centred in the balanced pathway of a gyroscope. We unexpectedly met the Payment family who we have been in contact with via email. They are also Canadians traveling around Europe for seven months. Next we walked to the Uffizi Galleria. On the way there we saw so many mopeds and motorcycles. Dad was really disappointed because he can't take any pictures of the thousands of paintings by Renaissance artists such as Felipe, Leonardo, Michelangelo, and many others. The progression of paintings changed as artists experimented with paintings attempting to make them real, and more three-dimensional. There was a lot of colour in the paintings and lots of nudes posses of Greek myths. After 4 hours of looking at all the details of certain paintings, thanks to Rick Steeves' podcasts, we were exhausted and over stimulated by seeing too many people in the pictures, too many Madonnas and pictures of Jesus. After resting at our hotel for a while, we join the Payment at Nerone Pizza restaurant and had a great time staying up with them at their place until 12.
