Dec 26, 2009: BlackForest and Guitars

Dec 26, 2009 (Dieter): Simply amazing how well we are being treated here. All of us feel very appreciated and part of the Nonn family. Every day is another celebration of food, people, and life. Today we enjoyed wild boar (thanks to a neighbour who is a keen hunter), two types of dumplings (regular potato and herbs with potato), and cauliflower. Tante Karin is an amazing chef, preparing all sorts of foods. We enjoyed a 45 minute drive through the Wiesbaden mountain, saw a replica of an old Roman tower and the wall that was build around 400BC, and ended up in Hünfelden, the place of my Onkel Dieter and his family. Here we enjoyed more wonderful German hospitality as we consumed the freshly made blackforest cake, Weinachtstrolle, and fruit tea. We met my cousin and his family (Dietma, Annette, Timi and Tessa). Dietmar and Annette are very creative during the recession and as they wait for the building trade to come back to life, they are taking care of horses for many people in the area. Karannina had the opertunity to meet Amy; their golden retriever, their very intelligent border collie, and Tommy their house cat. We are hoping to visit them again next Saturaday to see their horse operation. Next we travelled to Wiesbaden to enjoy another wonderful meal of smoked salmon (Lux), cheeses, bread, this one with Sabrina and Oliver. Oliver mesmorized us with his guitar playing, challenging us to name any tunes and playing them on his 12 string guitar. Sabrina challenged us to Rummikub (game). Thanks to Skype, we had a chance to visit with my parents in Abbotsford. We finished the evening with a 30 minute documentary of Onkel Klaus' former place of employment, the BKA and learned lots about the security, investigation, training of forensics.
