Saturday, April 3, 2010: From Kassel to Gileseberg

(Dieter): After cleaning and packing our bags for the final time in Kassel, a lunch of pizza, we bid our farewells with Gaby and Marios :( and headed for Gileseberg where we were surprised by Elke's wonderfully colourful table of tortes. After 'kuchen' time, we took a round trip through the nearby areas known for the Schalmer community (over 900 years). We visited a Gasthaus where the owner showed us pictures of the traditional dress still worn to this day. However, few people still do so. We continued our tour through various old year old) communities which had survived WWII and enjoyed the various Fachwerkhäuser. Ironic, these were the former homes of the poor and today only the well-to-do can afford to keep these in the old style. Our trip ended through a forest of coniferous trees, many of which had been recently blown over by strong winds from a few nights ago. We were amazed at how quickly the foresters had removed, cut, and stacked the timber. Elke ended our evening by serving us a feast of colours: deep fried cheeses with wild berry toppings and various vegetables.
